One of the challenges of writing historical fiction is imagining the world of the 1820s. What did people wear? How did they talk?
My protagonist, Captain Jane, is living in a man’s world in many ways, including sartorially. There were no uniforms designed for women sea captains, so she has to make do with adapting men’s clothing. When she goes ashore, she has to choose between feminine garments and sticking with the uniform that denotes her role aboard. In the second book of the series (coming soon!) we see her making some decisions about her clothing after one too many mishaps.
I scour the internet for ideas for her outfits and other features of the books — you can check out my Pinterest board for some of my inspiration images.
